First Aid Kits - Your Home's Defense

When I was creating tutorials I though what would be the best to begin with. Then I thought back to my childhood and the first aid kits my dad had in the car and his work truck.  The first aid kit he had in his workshop and the first aid kit mom had in the home. Each was distinctive, and each provided a different type of safety.
To begin with, a first aid kit should be within reach in case of an accident, either a small cut or rose thorns or bee stings.
In this blog I hope to point out some of the areas you may not have been aware of.

The picture below shows what I have on the counter of my bathroom sink. Alcohol swabs, 2 x 2 dressings scissors tape cotton swabs, all sorts of tape, cotton swabs, band aids and  Neosporin antibiotic. What is not shown here is Vaseline Petroleum Jelly which is in a large container in the medicine cabinet.

MINOR FIRST AID

All of this is kept in this container that sits on my counter of my bathroom sink, within easy reach should a mild accident requiring minor first aid.

This is my first line of defense in case I cut myself in the kitchen or a minor scrap simple emergencies.  You can go to a Dollar Store or something similar and obtain most of these first aid items.

MAJOR FIRST AID & REPLENISHMENT

To replenish the first aid kit on my bathroom counter I use a Craftsman tool box re-purposed as a 'Major First Aid Kit'.  I draw from this one to keep the other one supplied.

The Craftsman tool box is not only a replenishment but a level higher than the one on the bathroom sink.

The tray contains replenishment supplies such as 2 x 2 pads band aids, alcohol swabs and cotton swabs. Another tube of antibiotic with extra tape

 ADVANCED FIRST AID SUPPLIES

The bottom contains more first aid supplies than would be contained in the bathroom counter sink.

You will notice a 'surgical sponge' which is a large pad able to staunch the bleeding and a 'medical scrub'. Below that are more advanced first aid supplies.

First aid kits are very easy to create and maintain. You will not use it often but when you need it you will use it.

A WORD ABOUT OTHER KITS AROUND THE HOME

I would purchase a separate tool box for your tool shop or lawn tools and keep it at the ready.

If you do any yard work with power tools or lawnmowers you will need to think about and advanced first aid kit. When I was a young boy mowing the law bare foot with a bladed swirling blade I hit some rocks that took a good chunk out of my leg.  The pain was indescribable. It was bleeding.
You should have trauma pack (wound compresses) and 1 to 2 inch roller guaze with strong tape or at least the stretchable that will attach to itself. Just enough to get you to the ER or Urgent Care. Remember its called First Aid for a reason.
You can also go to a medical supply house or a safety store to purchase some wire splints and triangular bandages. (I would keep at least 4 Triangular bandages and a 1 inch , 2 inch and 3 inch roller compressors in the first aid kit too.
